Increasing Numbers of Social Enterprises in Suffolk

October 9th, 2010

Research by Suffolk Acre reveals the number of new social enterprises in the County continues to grow, with about a third being formed as Community Interest Companies (CIC’s)
One of the newest CIC’s is The Healing House based in Newmarket; established earlier this year to improve the health of local people through the provision of complementary therapeutic services to support and nurture emotional and physical well being. The social enterprise aims to benefit communities across the East of England providing services to local people including working with children and their families, schools, local authorities and primary care trusts and currently has treatment rooms in four locations.
Director and Founder Christine Charters-Young who is a qualified children’s yoga teacher and complimentary therapist said
“I started working with children in a local preschool developing some ideas to help them build confidence whilst having fun.  Feedback was fantastic with 100% of parents and teachers saying that the lessons were having a positive effect on the children.”
The CIC has worked with a range of groups from The Pre School Learning Alliance and The Guiding Association to HMP Prison Highpoint and is also a Change4life partner with the NHS
“It’s no longer just about giving support to a child, but to all those involved in nurturing the children, including parents, teachers and carers.  My overriding passion and goal is to ensure that all people are supported in trying to achieve optimum health and well being. I truly believe that many of the problems people have can be helped enormously with therapeutic activities.” said Christine.
